Case Study: Common Sense for Animals (CSA) nonprofit
Summary:
Founded in 1990 by Robert R. Blease, D.V.M. Common Sense for Animals (CSA) is a nonprofit organization that works to improve every area of human/animal relationships through education and community service. Their goal is to bring people together who share “common sense” or fundamental principles, regarding their heritage and freedom of choice as it relates to food-producing animals, companion pets, wildlife, research animals and the environment. Located in Warren County, NJ, Common Sense for Animals runs the area's only no-kill shelter and pet adoption center. They network with animal control officers and have become the area's central clearinghouse for lost and found pets. All homeless and injured animals brought to CSA are examined, vaccinated and tested for parasites and other species-specific maladies. They are then cared for until a good home is found. In 2006, CSA arranged the adoptions of over 1,600 animals.
The Challenge:
Security and monitoring was a major concern for the animal shelter. People often drop off unwanted pets anonymously or after hours — which is illegal. The safety and welfare of the many shelter animals on the grounds was also a major concern, as well as the security of the main building and pharmacy. Additionally, Dr. Blease wanted to be able to view the animals remotely so people could view those up for adoption before actually coming to the shelter. However, because of the size of the facility, one of the major challenges was getting power to all of the cameras, which included indoor and outdoor models.

The Solution:
Because of Panasonic’s diverse offering of network cameras, they can accommodate almost any application that requires a surveillance or monitoring solution. In order to address the specific concerns of the animal shelter, they chose a combination of indoor and outdoor POE (Power Over Ethernet) cameras that included the BB-HCM511A and the BB-HCM531A. POE cameras run the data and power over a single CAT5 wire, which means you don’t need an AC outlet nearby to power the cameras. Solving CSA’s power issue, they were able to place cameras in more desirable locations. They installed cameras inside the main building to monitor the kitten area which allowed them to see everyone who came in and out. They placed outdoor cameras on the dog runs to see the puppies and anyone who might visit the dogs. They placed a Netgear POE switch in the network room of the animal shelter and used the existing high-speed broadband connection to view and control the pan, tilt, zoom functions of the cameras over the Internet. The cameras provide clear, two-way communication and can also be set up to record, based on motion, timed events, or triggers attached to the cameras.

The Result:
Panasonic introduced their solutions for Common Sense for Animals at a press event in New York City on June 19th , along with their new PetCam application which utilizes the Panasonic Network Cameras to view your pet from anywhere in the world. Dr. Blease stated, “I am pleased with the work Panasonic has done and impressed with the features of the cameras. Thanks to Panasonic, I now have a solution that will allow me to monitor the safety of all the animals while providing me with peace of mind when I can not be at the shelter.” Panasonic also offered demos of many of the new camera models and showcased an interactive pet community they are sponsoring at www.seemypetcam.com. www.commonsenseforanimals.org www.seemypetcam.com www.panasonic.com/netcam
