Case Study #4: Doctor's Office

Bringing this doctor's office into the 21st century

The medical field has seen great advances in medicine and medical technology, and this local doctor's office was no exception. But while they provided patients with the best and most up-to-date care available, the phone system used by the doctor's office was another story. They had used the same phone system for the past 23 years and were quite comfortable with it, coming to us for an upgrade only out of necessity because the system was so obsolete.

The challenge

Like many small offices that have been in business for decades, this doctor's office was reluctant to change. The existing phone system, though obsolete and lacking in features, did the job, everybody was familiar with it and knew how to use it, and keeping the old system seemed to be the easiest thing to do. Nonetheless, the handwriting was on the wall, and it was time to put the old system out to pasture. They wanted a system that would be as similar to their old one as possible, a few of the modern conveniences available on the newer phones, and a choice of phone colors just to make the office a little more interesting.

The solution

We understood the emotional connection the office had with a system that had been in place for over two decades. One of the first things we wanted to do was to give them a set of phones that were a little more modern-looking, in a choice of colors to match the office décor. We put in an inexpensive, but feature-rich Panasonic TDA-50. The Panasonic did everything their old system did—which was easy, since their previous system was so old to begin with. In addition, the Panasonic gave them some added features, including caller ID and easy-to-use voicemail. Once we installed it, everyone in the office was very pleased with the remarkable ease of use of the voicemail system, and the ability to see who was calling before picking up the phone proved to be very useful and convenient for all the staff members.

In the future, the office may well decide to add extra features, or move to VoIP for additional cost savings, so the Panasonic was the obvious choice. It provided everything they needed at an affordable price, gave them some extra features and options, and left the door open for a future upgrade and a switch to VoIP.

The cost

The system was inexpensive, costing $2,896 installed. Because telephone service remained the same without a switch to VoIP, the monthly tariffs remained the same at $180 per month.
