Case Study #7: 110 Room Chain Motel
Motel gets new phone system and new revenue generating opportunity
A twenty-year old motel was undergoing a major renovation, and part of that renovation called for replacing their legacy phone system. The old Mitel SX-100 PBX was out of date, did not provide adequate features for today's motel guests, and carried an excessive monthly fee.
The challenge
The immediate challenge was to replace the legacy system with something that would offer more features and functions, greater ease of use, and offer savings on a month-to-month basis as well as a low initial capital expenditure for deployment. The new configuration would require 110 phones with voicemail for each room, as well as system phones at the front desk and in the manager's office. Emergency phones would also be required for the swimming pool area and elevator, along with a courtesy phone for the lobby. Two additional analog phones with message waiting were also requested for the housekeeping and maintenance staff.
The solution
We competed against both Mitel and NEC, delivering the best price with a savings of over $6,000 against the lowest competitor. We deployed a Panasonic TDE-100 VoIP system, and by moving to VoIP, were able to eliminate the need for the 12 existing ground-start trunks. The hotel's existing T1 line proved adequate for carrying the phone service, so no additional bandwidth was required. Because we deployed SIP trunking, the hotel was able to take advantage of low-cost, flat-rate long distance services, which gave the hotel an opportunity to generate revenue from providing long distance calling services to guests while minimizing their own costs of providing that service.
The cost
The cost of the deployment was $19,424. Because of the switch to VoIP, we were able to create a system that resulted in a monthly savings of $1,200. As a result, the system will pay for itself within 18 months.
